Very carefully? I started poking into abandoned buildings over 19 years ago, and developing lists of places. I photographed a lot of places before anybody else had even attempted them; I built up a huge body of work. It wasn’t until about year 15 that I was able to sustain myself purely on this body of work. I slaved at commercial photography or in various restaurant kitchens; I worked corporate jobs to buy gear and did $50 headshots for actors. You gotta eat a lot of shit pies if you want to become an art photographer. Eventually it worked out.
But you gotta be even more careful if you wanna do what I do. In the hundreds of buildings I’ve been to, I’ve nearly fallen through at least a dozen floors. I’ve had a cement floor give way beneath me. I’ve gotten Lyme Disease twice. And I’m a careful fool. A less careful fool would have diced themselves on razor wire; fallen through a floor; accidentally walked into a pocket of hydrogen sulfide gas and not known to hold their breath after the first whiff. A less careful fool would be dead.
You gotta be a bit of a fool to try to climb around ruined buildings with a camera - probably at any given time, your most expensive possession - on your back. So if you’re going to make a go of it, at least try to be a careful fool.
